Western Australia's Port Hedland, the world's largest iron-ore export hub, resumed operations at noon on Sunday after being cleared on Friday as tropical cyclone Mitchell developed off the coast of the resource-rich Pilbara region, the operator said.

Pilbara Ports on Friday cleared off the Port of Port Hedland along with ports of Ashburton, Cape Preston West, Dampier and Varanus Island, after Australia's weather bureau warned a tropical low off Western Australia's coast could develop into a tropical cyclone by Saturday morning.

While the Port of Port Hedland has resumed operations, the ports of Ashburton, Cape Preston West, Dampier, and Varanus Island remain closed, with an alert to be issued once they are safe to reopen, Pilbara Ports said on its website.

Tropical Cyclone Mitchell intensified on Sunday as it tracked towards the country's remote north-west, home to Port Hedland, about 1 300 km north of the state capital, Perth.

The port is used by miners including BHP Group, Fortescue, and billionaire Gina Rinehart's Hancock Prospecting.
